Bayern Munich have confirmed that Hoffenheim centre-forward Sandro Wagner will return to his boyhood club in January.

The German striker has been given the No. 2 shirt at Bayern, and his two-and-a-half year contract will keep him at the Allianz Arena until 2020.

The 30-year-old striker is a Munich native, and was also a part of the Bayern Munich academy. He spent 13 years at the club between 1995 and 2008, making 4 appearances. However, lack of first team action meant he left for Duisburg in search of regular football.

A delighted Wagner was thrilled upon his return, and commented: “A long journey has come to an end for me. I’m back home, back at my club in my hometown.

“I’m really happy that it’s all worked out. Bayern are the best team in Germany and one of the best in the world. I didn’t have to think long when the offer came in.”

Wagner has been impressive for Hoffenheim, having found the back of the net 15 times in 42 appearances since he joined the club in the summer of 2016.

Such form also earned him a place in the national team under the Joachim Low. The striker has netted 5 goals in the 7 caps he has won for Germany, and looks certain to feature for the Germans in the World Cup in Russia next year.

Meanwhile, at Bayern, Wagner will only be used as a backup for Robert Lewandowski, but he shall be a crucial signing nonetheless, as hinted by the Bavarian outfit’s sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic.

“A Germany international is joining FC Bayern in the form of Sandro Wagner. We’re convinced Sandro has the class and experience to improve the quality of our squad,” Salihamidzic stated upon the completion of the deal.
