There was another intense drama in St Petersburg and Argentina survived a scare to end as 2-1 winners against Nigeria in their final Group D game in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2018.
Argentina, who needed a victory to ensure likely qualification, were almost heading out before Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo scored a brilliant late volley in the 86th minute. The South American giants progressed to the round of 16 and will be up against France next.
The man of the moment was Lionel Messi, who scored a superb first half goal after showing his talent and composure. His control of the ball after Ever Banega found him with a peach of a pass, was emphatic. And the goal was even more sublime.
The Barcelona star had been in immense pressure prior to the game, but he once again showed why he is one of the best ever as he scored his first of the campaign. Speaking after the game, Messi stated that the players were confident and it was a well deserved joy.

“We were confident that we would win this game. It’s wonderful to have won it this way. It is a well-deserved joy,” said Messi.
He then went on to add that the shirt of national team is above all.
“I knew that God is with us and he was not going to leave us out. I thank all the people who are here, for all their sacrifice, and all those who are in Argentina who were always with us. The shirt of the National Team is above all.”
Meanwhile, Messi (2006, 2014 and 2018) also became the third Argentina player to have scored in three different World Cups after Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta.

How Mo Salah Reacted To Gimenez’s Late Goal

Egypt returned to the World Cup in slightly dampened spirits compared to the nation that had qualified for the finals in Russia. The African country had succeeded in doing so as a result of the heroics of Mohamed Salah.
However, his injury during the Champions League final against Real Madrid had many scared that he would miss out on the World Cup. Fortunately, this didn’t occur, and the Liverpool forward started their opener against Uruguay as an unused substitute.
The match ended in a 1-0 victory to the South Americans due to an 89th minute header from Jose Gimenez, which gifted the vital points to the team that didn’t deserve them outright.
Despite being deprived of Salah, Egypt performed incredibly well for the majority of the match, but began to lose their discipline during the dying minutes of normal time, which caused set pieces to be given away, resulting in the near-corner free-kick that caused their loss.

Salah wasn’t brought on during the game, clearly a bid from Egypt to ensure that he nursed himself back to full-fitness first. However, it was his reaction to Gimenez’s winner that is an apt way to put how Egypt fared during the game.

It was truly bad luck for the Pharaohs, who had an all-round brilliance to their style of play.
Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawi proved why he was chosen with incredible saves that denied Edinson Cavani on multiple occasions, while the efforts of Luis Suarez were muted save a misplaced attempt at the net in the first half.
Their group now consists of games against Saudi Arabia and Russia, the former of whom were thrashed by the hosts 5-0 on opening day.
A steep climb for the Egyptians, and it will be two games where Salah will have to give his all, and try to reproduce the kind of magic that saw him score 34 goals last season.

Manchester United’s transfer plans have seen a seeming drop after a flurry of activity from last week. It now seems increasingly likely that the anticipated finishing off of all pieces of business prior to the World Cup commencing will not occur.
Keeping this in mind, it is very important to observe those individuals that were thought to be on the cusp of a move from weeks now. Leading that list is the name of Alex Sandro, and now a big update may have been provided.
As per MEN, Manchester United will not pursue Alex Sandro this summer, despite being in the market for a left-back if the right option opens up.

A top-level club source has apparently revealed that Sandro is no longer a target, with the Brazilian reported to be mulling over a new contract at Juventus.
Further, the report adds that in addition to a left-back, Jose Mourinho has also prioritized the purchase of a centre-back and a second striker.

Moreover, a failure to land a left-back won’t worry the Portuguese gaffer, as multiple sources have reported that he considers Ashley Young and Luke Shaw to be decent options for the vital position.

What has really excited the fans about Fred is his performance against United five years ago in a Champions League encounter over two legs.

During Shakhtar’s 0-0 draw against the Mancunian club, Fred excelled throughout the game. In a video uploaded on YouTube, the player is seen giving his all and making some promising runs in attacking areas.

Fred also displayed his strong passing ability, which shows how suitable a replacement he would be for the evergreen Michael Carrick.
