Arsenal do not have a manager at the moment after Arsene Wenger’s departure, but that will not stop them from getting their first signing done in the upcoming summer.

The Gunners are looking to bolster their defence and have identified Caglar Soyuncu from German club Freiburg.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Soyuncu is nearing a move to London in a deal that could be in the region of £35 million.

Several other clubs were also said to be monitoring the player, but the report states that Arsenal are likely to land him.

The English club finished sixth in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season and is linked with former midfielder Mikel Arteta to be their new manager. Arteta assisted Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in the recently concluded season as the club won the EPL title with a record 100 points.

Arsenal have given the duty of making appointments to head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, who joined the club last year from German club Borussia Dortmund. And basically he is the one that has sanctioned the move of the 21-year-old player.

After getting the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the club, Mislintat believes that Soyuncu will be a key addition in the defence.

Arsenal defenders haven’t quite lived up to expectations after shipping in 51 goals in the 2017-18 season. That was 24 more than what Manchester City conceded.

The work will therefore be vital for Soyuncu, who has made a total of 47 appearances for Freiburg in two seasons. The Turkish international will hope to be a vital cog in the Arsenal set-up and impress his new manager, no matter who gets the nod.

Besides him, reports also state that the club is eyeing Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
